MN8 measures your brain waves via integrated EEG sensors.
The conductive, gold-plated sensors are the same as those used in research-grade EEG devices. The sensors capture small fluctuations in your brain activity while you wear them.
MN8’s ear hooks have two reference sensors. The reference sensors improve the EEG signal quality, so they must contact the skin behind your ear to effectively measure the EEG signal.
MN8 has two data streams: one for EEG and one for audio.
Voice prompts and LED behavior is only related to the audio connection and not the data connection.
The data streams need to be connected separately to ensure both work correctly.
Connect the EEG data stream — MN8 XXXX (Data)
Connect the audio stream — MN8 XXXX (Headphones)
Please note: XXXX represents the serial number of your headset.
Due to the sensitive nature of EEG measurements, the buds should feel very snug in your ear. If they don’t feel snug, try sizing up.
MN8 is fitted with medium earbuds. For your comfort and optimal contact quality, the following earbuds are also provided:
2 small earbuds;
2 large earbuds.
To learn how to change the earbuds, go to Adjusting Your MN8.
MN8’s adjustable ear hooks and sensors are designed to fit a wide range of ear sizes.
MN8 is shipped with standard sensors attached, which fit most ear sizes. The sensor pack also includes two sets of brush sensors. If you have small ears, we recommend fitting the brush sensors to your MN8. The soft brush sensors comfortably bridge the gap between the ear hook and the skin behind your ears without applying too much pressure — ensuring optimal contact quality while wearing MN8.
To learn about changing the reference sensors, go to Adjusting Your MN8.
Your MN8 is charged and tested before shipping — so you can start using it straight away.
To optimize the use of your MN8, we recommend that you fully charge it before use.
If the multifunctional LED does not glow when you turn your headset ON, it requires charging.
To charge the battery:
Plug the USB-B charging cable into the USB port at the bottom (shown above) of your MN8.
Then, connect the other end of the USB charging cable to a power outlet or PC/Mac.
Charging can take up to two hours (depending on the remaining capacity of the lithium polymer battery).
If the headset is unused for a long period of time, the battery will become heavily depleted of charge. If this happens, you may need to charge your MN8 for 24-hours.
If you have any issues charging your MN8, please contact the EMOTIV Support team.
MN8 is a compact EEG device with adjustable ear hooks for improved fit and comfort.
To ensure comfort and optimal contact quality while using MN8, you may want to adjust it.
Charging
Charging Complete
When MN8 is charging the red LED is displayed.
When MN8 is fully charged the LED turns green.
1. Place your MN8 over your neck with each pod resting against your shoulders.
2. Take the left-hand pod and feed the ear hook over your ear. Repeat with the right-hand pod. Make sure there is no hair caught in between the ear hooks and the back of your ear.
3. Push the earbuds into your ear canal, making sure that they fit comfortably but snuggly. Both bumps (reference sensors) in the ear hook should be touching the back of your ear.
Fitting / Changing the earbuds
MN8 is fitted with medium-sized earbuds at the time of shipping. Two additional sizes (small and large) are included in the accessories.
To change the earbuds:
Pull the attached earbuds off the metal canal sensors.
Once removed, you can fit the new earbuds by pushing them onto the metal canal sensor.
Due to the sensitive nature of EEG measurements, the ear buds should feel very snug in your ear. If they don’t feel snug, try sizing up.
Adjusting the ear hooks
If the ear hooks feel too tight or loose around your ears, they can be adjusted. The middle section of the ear hook (the section without the reference sensors) is flexible and can be gently squeezed or pulled to create a better fit.
Do not apply too much force, as you could break the ear hook.
Changing the reference sensors You can also change the reference sensors to improve the comfort and contact quality while wearing MN8 using the tool provided in the MN8 accessories pack.
